Emission Discrepancies in Mercedes and BMW Diesel Models

German Broadcaster ZDF and An Environmental NGO Found Emission Discrepancies in Diesel Models of Two of World’s Most Famous Auto Brands

The world is still in shock for what VW did to the owners of most of their diesel engine powered vehicles. The dieselgate scandal remained the hottest news for a couple of months, rest of the automakers were assuring the world that they have not done anything against law but until now. Some diesel models of two of Germany’s most luxurious car makers, Mercedes and BMW, have been tested by a German NGO and emission discrepancies have been found between road conditions and “test mode.”

What was VW’s Scandal?

Earlier in 2015, one of U.S. agencies found out that to drive down Nitrogen Oxide, Volkswagen Group used a cheat software, called defeat device. When the vehicles were tested for the environmental effects, VW turned ON the device and when the vehicles were put to road, the devices were turn OFF.

The result was really disturbing as then vehicles produced 40 times more Nitrogen Oxide than legally allowed limit in the U.S.

Who Conducted The Tests in Germany?

The tests were conducted by Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), a German environmental group, and the results were broadcasted by ZDF, German state broadcaster. According to German public broadcaster, Deutsche Welle, the tested Mercedes diesel engines and BMW diesel models indicated discrepancies between the road conditions and their “test mode”.

Which Models Were Tested?

There were actually three diesel cars tested: a C200 CDI from Mercedes year 2011, a 320d from BMW year 2009, and a Passat 2.0 BlueMotion from VW year 2011. The Mercedes hit 420 mg/km., the BMW reached 428 mg/km., and the VW recorded 471 mg/km. when the legal limit in EU is 180 mg/km. on the road.

“Neither BMW nor Mercedes can explain to us how these massive discrepancies came about…Talking about the wind or that there were more people in the car could maybe explain a 3 percent difference – we’ve got 300 percent. These discrepancies can’t be technically justified.” Said Resch from DUH.
